BACKGROUND 

The Water and Sanitation infrastructure sub-project will bring safe drinking water and acceptable sanitation to the residents of Mtendere. MPCA-Zambia is constructing around 80 kilometres of water distribution networks which will give 9600 properties consumer connections with water meters. More than 60 kilometres of this network with 8000 water connections has been completed and handed over to LWSC. The project will also construct 80 kilometres of Sewer Network with 9,600 Sewer House Connections to Mtendere which will directly impact public health and environmental protection by conveying sewage away to the Kaunda Square Ponds for treatment. So far around 56 Kilometres of sewers and 5,200 Sewer House Connections have been completed and handed over to LWSC. The Contract was signed on 27th July 2018 and works commenced on 27th August 2018.

CONTRACT

The Objectives of the LWSSD Project are to expand and improve reliability of water supply, sanitation and improve drainage services in selected urban and peri-urban areas of the city of Lusaka in order to reduce incidences of waterborne and water related diseases, generate time savings for households and businesses and reduce non-revenue water in the supply network.

CONTRACT PACKAGES 1 & 2

The scope of works for CP1&2 comprised the rehabilitation of the Iolanda Water Intake Structure, Raw Water Main Treatment Plant in Kafue, High Booster Stations at Iolanda and Chilanga as well as rehabilitation of the Treated Water Pipeline appurtenances between Iolanda and Chilanga as well as between Chilanga and Lusaka’s Stuart Parks Reservoirs. The scope further included rehabilitation and upgrade of distribution centers within Lusaka City by repairing concrete structures, replacement of pumps, chlorinators and motor control centers for 10 DCs. Last approximately 15 Kilometers of large diameter low carbon steel pipelines. A Supervisory Control and Data (SCADA) Acquisition platform was also developed and installed for selected sites including Iolanda, Chilanga and the Distribution Centers. CP1& 2 Contract was signed on 10th December 2015 and was issued a Taking Over Certificate on 29th April 2019. The works were undertaken at a cost of USD 62 Million.

CONTRACT PACKAGE 4 

 Construction Package Number 04 was the rehabilitation of the Kaunda Square Sewage Stabilization Ponds. Two streams of anaerobic ponds and facultative ponds were constructed with improved grit removal and solids screening inlet works while the treatment capacity was expanded from the original 18,000 Persons Equivalent to 156,000 Persons Equivalent. The rehabilitated and expanded ponds serve a catchment area that includes Chilenje South, Woodlands, Chilenje, Kabulonga, Ibex Hill, Helen Kaunda, Kalingalinga, Handsworth, PHI, Chudleigh, Mwambula and Chamba Valley. The Contract was signed on 28th September 2015 and contractor was issued a Taking Over Certificate on 6th November 2017. The works were undertaken at a cost of USD 11.3 Million. 

CONSTRUCTION PACKAGE 5

Construction Package Number was the development of water supply infrastructure in SOS East Village, Chipata Compound, Ngombe, Kwamwena and Ndeke Vorna Valley. The Scope comprised Construction of close to 300km of water distribution networks 30,000 water connections, 3 distribution centers, over 14 boreholes and installation of customer meters. An 800 cubic meter ground reinforced concrete reservoir was constructed to serve Kwamwena residential area while 750 cubic meters, 30 meter water tower was constructed to serve Ndeke Vorna Valley. By so doing the Compact introduced new water supply infrastructure not connected to the LWSC centralized infrastructure, to serve new development areas in the north-eastern corridor of the city. The Contract was signed on 19th January 2016 and Contractor was issued with a Taking Over Certificate on 14th November 2018. The works were undertaken at a cost of USD 24.4 Million.
